Microcontroller is a single chip microcomputer made through VLSI fabrication.
It is a small computer on a single integrated circuit commonly known as IC. In modern terminology, it is a system on a chip (SoC).
A microcontroller contains one or more than one CPUs (processor cores, you may heard as dual or quad or octal core) along with programmable input/ output peripherals and memory.

It was during 1970 and 1971 when Intel was working on inventing the world’s first microprocessor, that Gary Boone of Texas Instruments was working on quite a similar concept and invented the microcontroller.
HOW MICROCONTROLLER WORKS IN EMBEDDED SYSTEM
The MCU integrates (combines) a CPU (central processing unit), some memory in the form of registers, and some other circuitry that implements peripheral functionalities.
We can say that the CPU does “think”, the memory “stores” the relevant information, and the peripheral functions implement the nervous system that are; the inputs (seeing, hearing, feeling) and the responses (outputs) (hand and foot movements, etc.).
But when we say that the CPU “thinks,” we actually do not mean that it has consciousness, or it is capable of pursuing an independent line of thought. Truly, its operation is totally determined by a program (an ordered sequence of instructions), stored in memory. The CPU basically reads and executes (perform or implements) these instructions in the predetermined order.
There is no instruction that can tell the machine to “walk” or to “talk,” but we can only manipulate or computes the logics for example. A usual instruction tell the CPU to “read data or information from address XXX in memory,” or “write data to memory address YYY,” or “add” or “multiply” two values, and so on.
