DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICROCONTROLLER AND MICROPROCESSOR

Table of Contents

Difference between Microcontroller and Microprocessor is given in the table below. Which includes Memory, Processing capability, Application areas etc.

Must read all key points till the end of the topic to understand it properly.

MICROCONTROLLER AND MICROPROCESSOR

Microcontroller vs Microprocessor

S.N.

MICROCONTROLLER

MICROPROCESSOR

1.        Microcontrollers have RAM, ROM, EEPROM embedded in it. That’s why it does not need any external circuits to perform its task. However, Microprocessors have to use external circuits as it does not have RAM, ROM and other peripherals.
2.      Microcontrollers are based on Harvard architecture where program memory and data memory are separate Microprocessors are based on the Von Neumann model where program & data are stored in the same memory module.
3.      Processing or clock speed of microcontrollers is around 8 MHz to 50 MHz. Actually depends on a series of microcontrollers, but mostly a crystal oscillator of 16 MHz is used. Processing or clock speed of general microprocessors is above 1 GHz so it works much faster than microcontrollers.
4.      Microcontrollers are far cheaper than microprocessors While cost of systems made with microprocessors are high
5.      Examples of popular microcontrollers are 8051, AVR, PIC series of mc. Some examples of microprocessors are Pentium series, Intel core i3, i5, i7 etc.
6.      Microcontrollers are used for specific purpose applications. Like Robots, Sensors, Motors, Washing Machine etc. While Microprocessors are used for general purpose applications. Like games, Software, App etc.
7.      Microcontrollers are dedicated to work means we can see microcontroller based devices work after several years with the same speed. Microprocessors are not highly dedicated means microprocessor based devices like computers after a few years take time to process, even if they do complete it task but take more time.

Here is the difference between the Microcontroller and Microprocessor. Now read the next topics, what are logic states in microcontrollers and microprocessors.
